"Do I have to get a SHOT?!" What percentage of the time do you hear this from your kids on the way to the doctor's office? Many parents are uncertain - tell the truth? Lie? Fake a seizure?
 

Prepare yourself to feel medicals bad. Doctors enter medicine with the hope of making patients feel better. However, when delivering bad news, that's not what happens. No matter how people feel before I give them bad news, afterward they always feel worse. If I don't recognize this as normal, that working hard to make people feel good about bad news is not only counterproductive to the grieving process but potentially deleterious for our doctor-patient relationship, in the long run I'll add to my patients' pain rather than diminish it.

An old man goes to a doctor for a thorough medical examination. After the examination medicals fake the doctor tells him that he has good as well as bad news for him. He asks the patient what he would like to hear first. The patient says he would want to hear the bad news first. The doctor says that you have cancer and you have only about two years. The old man becomes worried that his life will be over after two years. He asks the doctor for the good news. The doctor says that he has Alzheimer's and in about two months time he would have forgotten what the doctor has told him today.

Nature gives people random hairlines. That's why wigs can look so fake at first glance. The hair is too perfectly lined up to be genuine. Others fakers want people to believe that they were in the military so they can develop credibility or project an air of toughness or strength of character.

Which is why every time I'm about to enter a patient's exam room to deliver bad news myself I pause and remember Mrs. Peterson, a woman I've never seen or heard from since, but whose life I irrevocably changed in the middle of the night while she lay at home in bed without her husband next to her--as she would from that point forward--all those years ago.
